In the second-grade Life Studies class, an āOimo Partyā (sweet potato party) was held. The children had the valuable experience of harvesting the sweet potatoes they had grown themselves, cooking them, and then enjoying them together.
Because the activity involved cutting and boiling the sweet potatoes, parents participated as volunteers to help ensure the children could carry out the cooking activities safely.

First, the children changed into their aprons. Then they carefully washed their hands and tools and wiped down the cooking tables, paying special attention to hygiene.
Next, it was time to wash the sweet potatoes and try peeling them with a peeler. For many of the children, this was their first time, so they worked carefully and earnestly, with a little nervous excitement.
After that, parent volunteers cut the sweet potatoes into small pieces using kitchen knives. The children watched closely and offered plenty of praise, saying things like,āWow, youāre so fast!ā and āItās amazing that you can do that while talking!ā
The children then filled a bowl with water and soaked the cut sweet potatoes for three minutes.
The sweet potatoes were boiled by the parent volunteers. Since fire was used, the children observed from a safe distance, carefully following their teachersā instructions. They waited eagerly as the potatoes cooked.
Once they were boiled, it was time for the most fun part! The children mashed the sweet potatoes using a masher. They worked together, dividing roles between holding the bowl steady and mashing.
Next, soy milk and sugar were added and mixed in.āIām hungry!ā and āI canāt wait to eat!ā could be heard from the children.
Finally, spoonfuls of mashed sweet potato were placed onto plastic wrap, rolled into round shapes, and carefully wrapped.

The sweet potatoes we all enjoyed together were deliciousāsweet with a gentle, comforting flavor.
After eating, it was time to clean up. The children carefully washed the cooking utensils and polished the sink until it was sparkling clean. We hope they enjoy helping out at home as well!
